In 1784 Launoy and Bienvenu exposed to public curiosity a little mechanical helicoptera that rose automatically in the air with its motive power, a simple clockspring with a trigger, wherein the force was, it must be acknowledged, previously laid in store. This was, we believe, the first practical demonstration of the future rational aero-navigation; but the interesting experiment was no sooner exhibited than forgotten.

In 1849 the Lyonnese Vignal re-invented and exhibited a similar model with as little success.

A few years later, in 1853, MM. de la Landelle and Ponton d’Amécourt—and, almost at the same time, Mr. Bright, a very distinguished English engineer—sent up and developed in the air a like description of apparatus.

On witnessing these mere toys rise automatically in the air, the illustrious savant M. Babinet had the courage (Academician against the Academy!) to place himself under our flag, and to exclaim:
